|ST. JOE RIVER SUNRISE
It has been since painting Birch Mirage that I felt compelled to paint a “long painting”. I knew I
wanted a landscape and preferably a water reflection. My friend Ned Fox was gracious enough to
allow me to go through some of his photographs of the St. Joe River and choose one I could
elongate and change the mood with color.
The hope was to create a serene painting that would be a calming force. It had been quite awhile
since I painted in this format. Fortunately I was also taking a studio class from Stan Miller and
between the two of us I was able to get back on track and create a piece that reminds me of some the
old “turn of the century” oil paintings, that were muted colors and moody. Small things like the sun’s
reflection on the river and the mist rising in the shadows are some of the subtle elements that
hopefully draw you in.
